Get a Security
One of the best things you can
do for your business is to bring in
a third-party consultant to conduct a
security review. An independent consultant is familiar with multiple manufacturers and can customize your security
program to your building’s unique
needs, notes John Bocker, Managing
Director at JB Group, LLC.
“Go out and look for a local consul-
tant to be a partner in your project,”
Bocker says. “They can steer you in the
right direction and help you make the
Security assessments will include at
least these areas, according to the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce:
■ The parking lot
■ Landscaping, especially if it blocks
clear lines of sight or could serve as
a hiding place
■ Exterior doors and windows
■ Locks and/or the access control
■ Security cameras and recording
■ How you manage visitors and
■ Storage for valuable supplies, money,
equipment and hazardous materials
■ Who has access to your executive
“Normally, the way a central monitoring system works is that they’ll try to reach
the owner before they call the police, and
that can slow things down. Someone who is
looking for high-value small items can wipe
out the whole place in that time,” Noble says.
“You’re going to be able to react quicker
than a monitoring system trying to get ahold
of you and then calling the police afterward.
If an alert goes to your smartphone or tablet,
Ensure that your indoor and outdoor
security features work together to deter
and delay criminals by obtaining a secu-
rity review from a third-party consultant,
Bocker recommends. (See “Get a Security
Review” below.) An extra pair of eyes can
spot vulnerabilities and opportunities you
might miss, and many of the consultant’s
recommendations will rely on making it
clear that your building is not an appeal-
ing target and anyone approaching it with
criminal intent will be caught.
“Go back to the basic features of security,” says Bocker. “Don’t look like a target
and don’t try to become a target.” B
